Wow, I'm nervous!

Part of this was on a whim. Ok, a lot of this was on a whim. But I figure if you're reading this, you might want to know my inspiration and some thoughts behind why I'm doing this and the reasons behind some of the rules.
First, I should say I am in no way involved with
therealljidol, although I did take some inspiration from there. As many of you know, I'm on the staff, which means as a rule we like to take care of Dreamwidth and our eyes are focused on what would make it successful. Above all else, I think what will make DW successful is people using it, and for people to use it we need to give them a reason. That's not to say
dreamwidth_idol is official, not at all, but the most successful things on DW aren't official!
I saw the success of LJ Idol and decided we might just be able to duplicate it here. With things like Three Weeks of Dreamwidth coming up, I want people to have a reason to participate and get involved! It's more fun when you can see what other people are coming up with, after all.
The biggest rule change from how LJI works is that you can join in DW Idol at any time. Part of why I never got involved over there was because I was never able to join the contest when they were open to new contestants. Just post a pool entry and get voted on and get on your way into a Cabal! Otherwise, if you've played any sort of Idol or Survivor type game, you'll ease right in.
Ultimately, you might call this something of a social experiment, my hosting a game like this. I sometimes feel like my connection with the userbase of DW is lacking, especially with those heavily involved in fandom, and I want to fix that. I'm doing more to write in my own blog, and while I won't be participating as a contestant, I hope to use this as an opportunity to meet people and discuss things. But more than anything else, I believe in Dreamwidth, and have since I came on board early in closed beta. This has been fun so far, and I want to expand that fun to everyone. If you have any inclination to, consider volunteering for DW at some point - answering support requests, designing styles, or even coding - we'll teach you! (end of shameless plug)
Get used to my saying this, I tell it to the Anti-Spam team all the time, and it's become a signature line for me - thank you for everything you do.
